Ukraine prepares to harvest its first cotton crop

01.08.2024 10:21

About 10 varieties of cotton were sown this spring on experimental plots in the Odesa region. According to Ukrinform, this was stated by the acting Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky on the air of the telethon.

«The cotton tree has already come down, the vegetation is active, the flowering has already been completed. The boxes are now being actively formed and in a few months we will be able to talk about harvesting and analyzing the indicators», — said the acting minister

He also noted that cotton needs access to water and favorable weather conditions.

«Moisture can be provided by irrigation. Temperature analyses were carried out before planting. They showed that Odesa and Mykolaiv regions have sufficient total temperatures for successful production», — the official noted

T. Vysotsky also made it clear that the most important thing is that the raw materials obtained meet the standards for defense purposes. It is also necessary to determine how profitable the culture is. According to him, it is necessary to plant 20-30,000 hectares of cotton for national defense needs.

«The result of the test will be no later than the end of October, after which we can talk with farmers about the potential large-scale sowing of cotton next year in Ukrainian fields», — he concluded.
