Food prices in Ukraine: overview for February 20, 2024

Food prices in Ukraine in recent weeks have shown heterogeneous dynamics, with price increases in some categories and stability or slight price increases in others. According to the State Statistics Service, in January 2024, the inflation rate for food and non-alcoholic beverages amounted to 0.5%, which is slightly higher than the general inflation rate (0.3%).

Vegetables and fruits:

— Seasonal vegetables: Prices for cabbage, beets, carrots and other seasonal vegetables remain affordable. For example, the average price per kilogram of cabbage is UAH 12, beets – UAH 10, carrots – UAH 14.
— Fruits: There is a seasonal increase in the price of citrus fruits, bananas and avocados. The average price per kilogram of oranges is UAH 45, bananas – UAH 40, avocados – UAH 80.
— Greenhouse vegetables and fruits: Prices of greenhouse vegetables and fruits, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and strawberries, are expected to begin to decline as spring approaches.

Meat and fish:

-Meat: Meat prices have remained stable in recent weeks, with the exception of chicken fillets, which have slightly increased in price. The average price per kilogram of chicken fillet is UAH 130, pork – UAH 110, beef – UAH 150.
-Fish: Prices for fish depend on the species and method of catching. For example, the average price per kilogram of fresh salmon is UAH 220, herring – UAH 90, hake – UAH 60.

Dairy products:

— Prices of milk and milk products have remained stable in recent weeks, with the exception of butter and cheese, which have slightly increased in price. The average price for a liter of milk is UAH 32, for a pack of butter (200 g) – UAH 55, for a kilogram of cheese – UAH 160.
Grocery:
— Prices of grocery products such as cereals, pasta, sugar and flour have remained stable in recent weeks. A slight increase in the price of sunflower oil is observed. The average price per kilogram of buckwheat is UAH 55, rice – UAH 45, pasta – UAH 28, sugar – UAH 22, sunflower oil – UAH 65.

Experts predict that food prices in Ukraine will remain relatively stable during 2024, with a possible slight increase in some categories.
