Ukraine has announced a review of tomato prices

05.08.2024 10:04

Last week in Ukraine, the trend towards lower prices for greenhouse tomatoes intensified. This is reported by analysts of the EastFruit project.

The stabilization of the weather in many regions allowed the resumption of the harvesting campaigns of ground tomatoes. According to the farmers, despite harvesting in almost all regions of the country, the demand of buyers for these products remains low due to poor quality indicators.

As of today, prices for high-quality tomatoes have fallen to UAH 20-40/kg ($0.49-0.97/kg), which is an average of 22% cheaper compared to the last working week.

Both producers and wholesalers associate sales problems with the low quality of tomatoes. The hot, dry weather has a great impact on the plants, and the fruits are often damaged in the sun and cracked.

Despite a gradual decline in the price of greenhouse tomatoes, these products are now sold on the domestic market on average 25% more expensive than a year ago. Ukrainian producers explain this by the overall drop in tomato production in the country.
