New rules to protect local produce come into force in Ukraine

28.08.2024 10:07

From August 16, 2024, new rules for the registration of geographical indications in Ukraine, approved by the Ministry of Economy, came into force. From now on, Ukrainian producers of products with special qualities due to geographical origin will be able to register geographical indications according to clearly regulated procedures. The Ministry of Economy informs.

«The use of geographical indications not only emphasizes the uniqueness of Ukrainian products, but also contributes to the development of our agricultural regions. This helps to preserve the traditions and knowledge handed down by local producers from generation to generation», — stressed the Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine Vitaly Kindraty.

What are geographical indications? It is a place name that indicates the origin of a product in a particular region and confirms the special properties, reputation or characteristics of that product depending on its location. Examples include well-known wines and local cheeses that are produced only in certain regions.

What will the new rules change? The new regulations of the Ministry of Economy, registered on July 24, 2024, establish clear requirements for the registration of geographical indications for agricultural products, foodstuffs and alcoholic beverages. The new rules detail who is eligible for registration, what documents need to be submitted and how to prepare a product specification.

The new rules will be in line with the European Union's norms, which will allow Ukrainian geographical indications to be officially recognized and protected within the EU. This is an important step towards the development of local producers and the promotion of their products on the European market.
