Cheese consumption in Ukraine decreased

24.07.2024 10:19

The heat wave in Ukraine has led to a significant reduction in cheese consumption. In addition, due to the prolonged shortage of electricity, Ukrainian consumers have significantly reduced the volume of one-time purchases of fresh products, in particular cheese.

Despite the increase in production costs, cheese makers do not yet dare to raise the base price of their products. However, work with networks and distributors has already begun. There will probably be a significant price increase at the end of the summer.

Imported cheese on the shelves of many chain stores is in no way inferior to domestic cheese, but its purchase does not meet expectations. The number of imported cheeses on the shelves of many stores is not less than domestic ones, but contrary to expectations, the number of purchases of imported cheeses does not increase. The devaluation of the hryvnia probably had an impact. Logistical problems also hinder normal trade.

Imports of cheese in the first half of the year were about 3% higher than in the same period last year. In conditions of declining consumption, this large volume of European cheese is displacing domestic cheeses on store shelves.

Ukrainian cheese producers are trying to increase cheese exports, the profitability of which has increased due to the devaluation of the hryvnia. In the first half of the year, sales of semi-hard cheeses abroad increased by 7% compared to the same period last year, and cheese exports reached a record high.
