Grain Exports from Ukraine: Difficult Challenges and First Steps to Recovery

19.03.2024 13:48

Since the beginning of 2024, exports of grain from Ukraine have decreased significantly due to a full -scale war, resolved by Russia.

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, as of March 18, 2024, 3.5 million tons of grain were exported from Ukraine, which is 5 times less than in the same period of 2023.

The main reason for the reduction of exports is Russia's blocking of Ukrainian ports. This has led to the accumulation of considerable amounts of grain in warehouses in Ukraine and an increase in food prices in the world. The Government of Ukraine is taking a number of measures to restore grain exports. In particular, alternative routes for grain exporting across the western borders of Ukraine and the Danube ports are being developed. Negotiations are also negotiating with international partners to unlock Ukrainian ports.

On March 18, 2024, negotiations were held in Istanbul with the participation of Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the UN, which led to the signing of an agreement on unblocking exports of Ukrainian grain. According to the agreement, a coordination center was created in Istanbul, which will control the exit of ships from Ukrainian ports. The inspection of ships with Ukrainian grain is also provided by joint teams from representatives of Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the UN.

Restoration of grain exports from Ukraine is an important step for stabilizing the global food market and ensuring the food security of Ukraine.

Forecasts:

-It is drawn that the export of grain from Ukraine in 2024 will be much lower than in 2023.
-Powy in the world may remain high until the end of 2024.
-Restoration of grain exports from Ukraine will depend on the safety situation in the Black Sea.
