Potato prices in Ukraine: dynamics since the beginning of 2024

07.03.2024 13:58

The price of potatoes in Ukraine has undergone significant changes since the beginning of 2024, demonstrating a dynamic trajectory determined by a complex of factors.

January 2024 was marked by an increase in prices for early potatoes, which reached 1.20 euros per kg. This phenomenon is explained by the seasonal factor, because at the beginning of the year, the supply of early potatoes on the market is limited, and the demand remains high.

However, already at the beginning of March, potato prices fell to 0.16 EUR/kg from the farm. This trend is due to a complex of reasons, including:

Increase in supply: new early-ripening potatoes from the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions appeared on the market, which led to increased competition and, as a result, lower prices.
Decrease in demand: the deterioration of the economic situation in the country negatively affected the purchasing power of the population, which caused a decrease in the demand for potatoes.
Export problems: the war and Russia's blockade of Ukrainian ports made it much more difficult to export Ukrainian potatoes to other countries, which also negatively affected prices.

At the same time, experts predict a renewed increase in potato prices in February-March 2024. This trend can be caused by:

A seasonal factor: traditionally, at this time, potato prices rise due to a seasonal decrease in supply and an increase in demand, because stocks of early potatoes are exhausted, and new potatoes have not yet matured.
Reduced quality: Adverse weather conditions seen in 2024 could lead to reduced quality of the potato crop, which is likely to drive up prices for a quality product.
Rising prices for other food products: a general increase in food prices in Ukraine is also predicted, which may lead to a redistribution of demand in favor of potatoes, as one of the most affordable products.
Currently, prices for potatoes in Ukraine vary depending on the region and variety. On average, a kilogram of potatoes on the market costs UAH 15-20.

The situation on the potato market remains dynamic and complex. It is expected that during 2024 the price of potatoes
will continue to fluctuate, depending on seasonal factors, demand, supply, as well
the impact of a full-scale war and other economic and political factors.
