Fruit prices in Ukraine: an overview of the dynamics since the beginning of 2024

11.03.2024 13:50

The price of fruit in Ukraine has undergone significant changes since the beginning of 2024, which is due to a complex of factors, such as seasonality, weather conditions, war and the economic situation.

January 2024 was marked by a seasonal increase in prices for citrus fruits, apples and bananas. This phenomenon is explained by the traditional decrease in the supply of these fruits during the winter period, as well as the high demand caused by seasonal holidays.

However, already at the beginning of February, citrus prices began to decrease, which is connected with the beginning of the new export season from leading producer countries, such as Turkey and Egypt.

The price of apples remained relatively stable during the winter, thanks to sufficient reserves of domestic products.

Banana prices, after a sharp rise in January, stabilized in early February, but remain higher than in 2023. This is due to the logistical problems caused by the war, as well as the increase in the price of fuel and other cost components.

The war also had a significant impact on fruit prices in Ukraine. As a result of the occupation of the Kherson region, where significant amounts of early berries and fruits were grown, the supply of these products on the market decreased.

The economic situation in the country also negatively affected the demand for fruit. Rising prices for other food products and utilities forces people to save, including on fruit.

Fruit prices in Ukraine are expected to continue to fluctuate through 2024, depending on seasonal factors, supply and demand, as well as the impact of full-scale war and other economic and political factors.

Important factors affecting prices will be:

Weather conditions: Unfavorable weather conditions may result in lower fruit yields, which is likely to drive up prices.
Resumption of exports: in case of resumption of export of Ukrainian fruits to EU countries and other markets, this may lead to a decrease in prices on the domestic market.
Government support: The government takes measures to support agricultural producers, which can help stabilize fruit prices.

In general, the situation on the fruit market in Ukraine remains dynamic.
Consumers should be prepared for price fluctuations throughout the year,
as well as to the seasonal increase in the price of fruits in the winter period.
