Sowing campaign of 2024 in Ukraine: challenges and prospects

12.03.2024 13:44

The 2024 sowing campaign in Ukraine began on February 24, but the war unleashed by Russia creates significant obstacles for agricultural work.

Challenges:

-Occupation of 20% of arable land: It is impossible to carry out agricultural work on the occupied territories.
-Mining: A threat to the safety of farmers and a complication of access to agricultural land.
-Logistics problems: Complicated supply of fuel, seeds, fertilizers and spare parts for agricultural machinery.
-Increasing prices: Increase in farmers' costs for resources and agricultural machinery.

Government support:

-Program «State support for agriculture during martial law»:
— Compensation to farmers for the cost of seeds, fertilizers, fuel and plant protection products.
— Preferential lending.
-Crop insurance against war risks.

Predictions:

— Completion of the sowing campaign in a short period of time.
-Reduction of areas under hot crops by 10-15% compared to 2023.

An important factor:

-The possibility of exporting Ukrainian grain for the food security of Ukraine and the world.
— Unblocking the Black Sea ports and guaranteeing the safety of navigation in order to preserve Ukraine's position on the world grain market.

Summarizing all the information, we can confidently say that the successful implementation of the sowing campaign in 2024 depends on:

-The effort of farmers.
— Support from the state.
— Harmony of Ukrainian society.
