Onion prices in Ukraine are lower than last year

Onion prices in Ukraine have started to fall again and are already below last year's level. That's according to Project EastFruit analysts.

To date, onion harvesting has begun in almost all farms in Ukraine, and the supply is growing quite rapidly. However, according to the farmers, the demand is very low, and, unfortunately, the decrease in prices does not affect sales.

Now Ukrainian farmers are ready to ship onions at 7-13 UAH/kg, which is on average 17% cheaper than last weekend.

According to market participants, the downward trend in prices is mainly due to the high supply and low demand for onions. Most farms began to actively sell their existing stocks of low-quality products. At the same time, many farmers report that weather conditions have meant that there have been very few storable onions this season. This has led to a significant increase in the loss rate and the proportion of poor quality products that manufacturers are trying to sell in the first place.

It should be noted that onion prices in Ukraine are now on average 12% lower than in mid-August 2023. However, some market participants believe that the market situation will change in September. At this time of the year, the stock of onions on the farm is greatly reduced, and the price of onions rises.
