Banana prices in Ukraine: a seasonal decrease is expected

02.05.2024 13:48

After a sharp rise during the winter and spring, banana prices in Ukraine are beginning to show a downward trend. According to experts' forecasts, this is a seasonal phenomenon associated with an increase in supply on the world market.

Banana prices in Ukraine have reached record levels in recent months. In March 2024, the average price per kilogram in retail chains exceeded 70 hryvnias. This was due to a number of factors, the most important of which were:

-Decreased deliveries from Ecuador: Due to unfavorable weather conditions in Ecuador, the world's largest exporter of bananas, the volume of deliveries to the world market has decreased.
-Increasing demand in Europe: The war in Ukraine led to disruptions in the supply of fruit from other regions, which stimulated demand for bananas in Europe, where Ukraine is one of the key importers.
-Rising prices for transport services: Rising prices for fuel and other transport costs have also had a negative impact on the cost of bananas.

However, now the situation on the global banana market is beginning to change. Increased supply from other exporting countries,  such as Colombia and Costa Rica,  results in lower prices. This trend is expected to continue in the coming months. Analysts predict that by the end of summer, banana prices in Ukraine may drop to 50-60 hryvnias per kilogram. This will be good news for Ukrainian consumers, who have been forced to pay significantly more for bananas in recent months.

It is important to note that banana prices may vary by region, store, and variety. However, a general tendency to lower prices is expected throughout Ukraine.

In addition to seasonal factors, banana prices in Ukraine can also be affected by other factors, such as currency fluctuations and the political situation. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that prices may rise again in the future.
