The European Commission will create transport "solidarity routes" with Ukraine to increase food exports

16.08.2022 15:49

The European Commission decided to create solidarity routes to help Ukraine export agricultural products.

The official website of the European Commission reports this today.

«Due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its blockade of Ukrainian ports, Ukrainian grain and other agricultural goods can no longer reach their destination. The situation threatens a global food crisis, and there is an urgent need to create alternative logistics routes using all relevant modes of transport.» — the message says.

Transport Commissioner Adina Valean said: «20 million tons of grain should leave Ukraine in less than three months with the help of EU infrastructure. This is a huge challenge, so for both short-term and long-term solutions, we will work with the Ukrainian authorities and especially with neighboring member states who have spared no effort to help during this crisis.»

Currently, six seaports cannot receive and send cargo due to Russian military aggression. Only the Danube port is working normally. Over 90% of total trade passes through ports that are now either closed or blocked. The Danube port is capable of providing 10% of cargo traffic, and the Ministry of Infrastructure is currently taking measures to increase its capacity.

According to Serhiy Bratchuk, the spokesman of the Odesa Regional State Administration, the Russian Federation is blocking the export of Ukrainian grain in order to create a food crisis in the countries of Africa and the Middle East, and to continue to put pressure on the countries of the world.
