How the price of vegetables in Ukraine changed in February

29.02.2024 16:06

Prices for vegetables in Ukraine during February 2024 showed ambiguous dynamics, changing depending on the type of product, region, weather conditions and other factors.

In particular, a significant price increase was observed for the following vegetables:
-Beets: by 40.7%, up to UAH 16.1/kg. Experts explain this growth with a shortage of high-quality beets on the market, because many farmers were unable to save their harvest due to the war.
-White cabbage: by 27.9%, up to UAH 14.3/kg. The increase in the price of cabbage is associated with low temperatures, which negatively affected its storage.
-Carrots: by 26.2%, up to UAH 14.4/kg. The increase in carrot prices is also explained by the seasonal factor and the shortage of products on the market.
— Onions: by 11.7%, up to UAH 16.9/kg. Onion prices began to rise due to demand from processing enterprises.
— Potatoes: by 41.8%, up to UAH 21.5/kg. Experts explain the significant increase in the price of potatoes with low stocks of a quality product, because part of the harvest was lost due to the war.

At the same time, price reductions were recorded for the following vegetables:

— Cucumbers: by 22.6%, up to UAH 14.2/kg. The decrease in prices for cucumbers is associated with a seasonal increase in supply from greenhouses.
-Tomatoes: by 18.5%, up to UAH 20.3/kg. Tomato prices are also decreasing due to the seasonal factor and increased competition in the market.
— Sweet pepper: by 15.4%, up to UAH 34.6/kg. Despite the increase in prices during January, sweet pepper prices began to decrease in February.

Experts predict that with the arrival of spring and the beginning of the new season, prices for vegetables in Ukraine will begin to decrease. However, the final price dynamics will depend on many factors, including weather conditions, volumes of the new crop and the situation in the country.

In addition to the above, other factors can affect vegetable prices, such as:

-Increasing prices for energy resources: this leads to an increase in costs for the production and storage of vegetables.
-Logistical problems: The war caused problems with the transportation of vegetables, which could also affect prices.
-Demand from other countries: if the demand for Ukrainian vegetables is high abroad, this may lead to an increase in prices on the domestic market.
